Facts About the Nutrition in the Ingredients

This smoothie is a real food recipe chalk full of nutrient dense raw foods. My husband and I had the great fortune of finding some wild blueberries while we were on a fishing trip in northern Canada this fall. But don't worry, the garden version of the blueberry is also super rich in all things super. The Superpower Smoothie will leave you feeling satiated and superhuman. I hope you enjoy this smoothie as much as I do!

This little berry has so many crazily potent antioxidants it is off the charts. This means they will protect against cellular damage from free radicals; keeping you healthier and younger. Of course their antioxidant value makes them good for your heart and cardiovascular system. So does their high fiber content. Blueberries also contain special nutrients that help reduce the symptoms experienced by people with age related cerebral disorders like dementia. (4)

Blueberries can be found in the freezer or fresh section of any organic market, grocery store, or farmer's market.

Almonds - "King of the Nuts"

With a super high nutritional value, almonds put all other nuts to shame. They are a source of good fats, which of course make them a friend to your heart. Studies suggest they will help you lose weight and can help regulate your blood sugar levels. They are also great for your digestive system as studies show a diet high in almonds may prevent colon cancer and improve gall bladder health. (1)

When purchasing almonds, do your best to find almonds that are raw and stored in the fridge at the time of purchase. Also look for almonds that still contain their skins (they have not been blanched). Almonds can be purchased at any organic market or grocery store.

A cruciferous vegetable, so ladies, it WILL help with hormone regulation! Kale contains lots of sulfurophane which will help your liver to neutralize toxic substances. A healthy liver means a healthy hormone balance. Kale also protects against cancer by supporting the liver. Worried about your vision? Add kale to your diet. Kale has been shown to ward off cataracts and it's high vitamin A levels will help support good vision. Of course Kale is packed with antioxidants that protect our DNA from free radical damage and keep our immune systems strong. (2)

Kale can be purchased at any organic market or grocery store.

Hemp Hearts (Seeds)

These little seeds are simply amazing! They are a complete protein; just 2 tbps. has more protein than 1/2 a chicken breast. They also contain a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, making them great for weight loss, brain health, eye health, and for reducing inflammation. Does your immunity got you down? Sprinkle some hemp seeds on everything, the high values of a certain phytonutrient called edestin will help build up your first line of defence against infection. Ladies I'm in looooove with the hemp plant. I truly believe this one plant will save the world. Not only does it produce those nutrient packed little seeds in great abundance; but it can also be used to make textiles, rope, building materials, fuel, plastics, and paper. (3)

Hemp seeds can be found in any organic market, farmers market, and recently in grocery stores too. Keep these babies in the fridge in a sealed container - they are full of good fats and will go rancid if they have too much exposure to light, heat, or oxygen. (3)

Cacao aka Chocolate

Yes you heard right - chocolate is a superfood. But lets not confuse raw cacao with the sweetened dairy chocolate like substance (candy bars) you find at a gas station. Cacao is the raw form of chocolate. It is a bean found on the cacao tree in South America. Funny story, cacao means "Food of the Gods!", and yes it is. This little nut is packed with antioxidants and minerals. Forget the multi-mineral, pop a few cacao beans a day and call it done. Cacao has been found to help balance blood sugars, help with neuro-transmissions, and it will help to rejuvenate you from head to toe. (3)

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you are probably wondering what the difference between "Cacao" and "Cocoa" is. Cocoa or cocoa powder is cacao beans that have been put through a machine removing about 23% of the oils. It is then treated with alkaline salts to allow the powder to mix better with water. The process also makes the chocolate darker in colour and milder in flavour. (3)

Cacao can be found in any organic market. It comes in bean and ground forms.
