Baby Bump Diary: Week 17
This is the first ever Baby Bump Diary posting. Because I'm so excited to have my first baby, every Tuesday I will be sharing with you updates on my pregnancy and my pregnancy pictures. I am due on July 29th, so I'm not quite half way done growing my baby. I hope you enjoy reading about my journey.
This week's baby bump photo isn't the best, but it's all I got. I will step it up next week with a super awesome photo. To see my better 16 week photo, check out the Baby Bump Diary page.
Overview - Up to and Including Week 16
I pretty much got up one day in November and found I had no appetite. I opened the fridge and the smells made me want to hurl. I would cook a meal, be excited about it, sit down to eat and blah, it tasted off and I wanted nothing to do with it. This is how I knew I was preggers. I peed on 4 sticks, all said positive. Yay, finally we are going to have a baby!
I'm not going to lie, my first trimester was tough. I actually lost about 10 pounds due to my aversion to food. The only food I could stomach on a regular basis was fruit. I would make smoothies, hiding small amounts of leafy greens, hemp seeds, and almond butter in an attempt to keep my nutrition up. All other foods were hit or miss. I was luckier than most though, I only upchucked twice. My pregnancy diet wasn't the best in the first few months, but I managed and moved on.
I also slept all the time. Throughout the christmas holidays I slept on average 9 hours a night along with a good 1-2 hour afternoon nap. Despite all the sleeping my energy levels were low. I was lazy and didn't feel like doing much. I forced myself to go for walks, or x-country skiing with the family.
Week 13 brought our first ultra-sound. Okay, these are awesome. I never understood how cool an ultra-sound was until we experienced it. You get to see everything including the baby's movements. At 13 weeks our little bundle of joy was quite active. We also got good news, our baby was not at high risk of chromosomal abnormalities and so far the pregnancy was progressing as normal.
Almost as soon as I started my second trimester (week 14) I began to feel better. My appetite returned and my energy levels were boosted. I still slept for 10-12 hours at night, but afternoon naps were no longer necessary. Life in the second trimester is definitely better!
I am entering the third week of my second trimester and I feel great. I have energy to exercise so I've been doing my best to get outside. There was also a break in the weather last week, we went from -20°C to 0°C, so my motivation is up. I went for two long hikes. Saturday Mr. B and I hiked the park in front of our house (this is where the baby bump pic is from). Yesterday a friend and I went to the rocky mountains and did a 2 hour hike with our dogs. Both outings were much needed and peaceful.
I am up 6 pounds from my lowest weight in the first trimester. I'm happy and feel better about myself for putting on weight. (I never thought I would say those words) Through the second trimester I am expected to gain about 1 pound per week. I will be weighing myself weekly for peace of mind that my weight gain is on track.
I have made the choice to supplement my pregnancy diet:
I am taking a high nutrient fermented cod liver oil (by green pastures). This is the most important supplement you can take during a pregnancy. This oil contains good amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and vitamin D in forms that are safely absorbed and used for the growth of your baby. All 3 of these nutrients are essential to your baby's health. In my opinion, Green pastures makes the most trusted product.
I also supplement with a good quality multi-vitamin. I chose Mega Foods Baby & Me Herb Free because the vitamins are not synthetic, but sourced from whole foods. Mega Foods makes one of the highest quality multi-vitamins on the market. They also formulated Baby & Me containing herbs that have shown to be beneficial during pregnancy.
Finally, I use a probiotic supplement. Specifically the Renew Life Ultimate Flora because it contains 50 billion cells. I will write a future article about the importance of probiotics during pregnancy. If you have questions now, please feel free to comment below.
The big news this week - my belly finally popped. I have a baby bump, so I now look like I have a bun in the oven. I am so happy about this. A good friend leant me her maternity clothes to wear right at the perfect time, because as of this week my old jeans don't fit.
